Health Equity: Moving from Understanding to Solutions

On Monday, June 7 our Center Director Dr. Lisa Cooper was interviewed by Dr. Sandra R. Hernández,  president and CEO of the California Health Care Foundation, as part of the 2021 Virtual National Health Equity Summit: The Leading National Forum on Practical Case Studies and Solutions for Advancing Health Equity.  At the start of the conversation, Dr. Hernandez set the tone by saying:

“… [in this conversation] we will explore moving from concepts of health equity to what we know works and what we’re learning about what works.”

Dr. Cooper began by sharing her background. Growing up in Liberia, seeing first hand that not all people have access to resources that will help them lead a healthy and happy lives really influenced her and highlighted inequities at a very young age. She spoke about her journey to where she is now, the influence her parents’ professions had on her, and how  she and her colleagues here at the Center have built relationships -- based on clear communication, mutual respect,  and trust -- with community members and organizations (including Sisters Together and Reaching, Inc)  for over a decade. This community academic partnership conducts research that is informative, relevant, practical, and contributes to changes that advance health equity. She also discusses how her new book, “Why Are Health Disparities Everyone’s Problem?” provides lessons on how we can each play a role in advancing health equity.  To watch the full interview, press play on the video to the right or at the hyperlink below.
