From Johns Hopkins University Press, in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Office of Research, comes this highly-anticipated book—part of the new print and digital media series Johns Hopkins Wavelengths. Other authors in the series include Jessica Fanzo, PhD; Ashani T. Weeraratna, PhD; Peter Agre, MD, and Center Faculty Rexford S. Ahima, MD, PhD.

Through the narrative, Dr. Cooper shows how we can work together to eliminate the injustices that plague our health care system and society. The book follows Cooper’s journey from her childhood in Liberia, West Africa, to her thirty-year career working first as a clinician and then as a health equity researcher at Johns Hopkins University. Drawing on her pioneering research and leadership experiences, it explores how differences in communication, the quality of healthcare provider/patient relationships, and community involvement affect health outcomes. Through detailing the personal actions and policies needed to reverse conditions that ultimately harm us all, this evidence-informed account raises readers’ literacy on numerous generations-deep injustices while leaving them optimistic about our collective ability to move at-risk communities forward.

Lisa Cooper, MD, MPH, is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor in Equity and Healthcare within the Johns Hopkins University Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health, and is the founder and director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Equity. A 2007 John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellow, Dr. Cooper serves as a trustee of The Carter Center and on the NFL Disparities Advisory Committee. She is a frequent contributor to media outlets, including The Economist, Essence, The Guardian, NPR, the New York Times, and PBS NewsHour.
